I liked the Foreign Jeep one, but it’s not true…
The F stands for gas engines (F, 2F, 3F, etc)
The J stands for...believe it or not...Jeep!!!
Jeep was a generic name a long time ago; it was used by Ford, Land Rover, Willy’s,
Toyota, and Mitsubishi. Willy’s was smart enough to trade mark the name. That forces
all others brands to create a name for their multi purpose vehicles, called Jeep.

The name F.J stands for......

F is for the series "F" engine

J is for the "J" type frame

I was told by a very mature Toyota dealer here in Tucson, that it simply meant "From Japan

I thought it was the initials of the designer of the machine, but now that I've had mine for six months, I think it stands for F*****g Jammer!! Mine went from Phoenix, Az to Mazatlan, Sinoloa, Mexico...910 miles, not kilometers, in one day! Just as happy as it could be. It is quite the f-jammin' machine!

What does FJ stand for.....well I know alot of you think it is stands for Foreign Jeep but I beg to differ. I think it is for Future Journey is my book. But that is all in the eyes of the driver who will be taking them.

Toyota designated the FJ to distinguish between two different types of engine when the Land Cruiser went into production in 1957. "FJ" was designated for Petrol or Gasoline engine type and the "BJ" was for diesel engines. The "FJ" engine type were sold mainly in the United States. The "BJ" diesel engine were never sold in the United States and almost all were sold in other countries.

Speculation grew that the "FJ" was derived from Mt. Fuji (in short) when the first Land Cruiser was tested in 1957 and climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan. The other theory was "FJ" is an acronym for Foreign Jeep. This came about after World War II, the U.S. Army gave the contract to Toyota to build a true 4x4 vehicles for the military. The Jeep/Willys objected to this contract and the U.S. Army reversed their decision and awarded to contract to Jeep instead.
